Brighton 2–1 Liverpool : Welbeck Doubles Up as Seagulls Stun the Reds at the Amex

Liverpool came into today’s Premier League clash at the Amex needing a response — and instead walked away empty-handed. Brighton & Hove Albion produced a composed, clinical performance to beat Liverpool 2–1, with Danny Welbeck the star of the show, scoring both goals for the Seagulls in a result that piles yet more pressure on Arne Slot and his struggling side.

Here’s how it all unfolded.

The Match Was Almost Delayed Before It Even Started

In a strange twist, kick-off was pushed back by 15 minutes due to a road traffic accident on the nearby A27 — but once the whistle finally blew, neither team needed long to find their rhythm.

First Half: Brighton Strike Early, Liverpool Scramble Back

Liverpool started the afternoon already weakened. Mohamed Salah was ruled out through injury, and just minutes into the game, Hugo Ekitike — who collided with James Milner — was limping badly and unable to continue, forcing Slot to bring on Curtis Jones as an early replacement. It was a nightmare opening for the visitors.

Brighton wasted no time capitalising on Liverpool’s disorganisation. A hopeful cross from the left was nodded back across goal by Diego Gómez, and Welbeck was perfectly positioned to head home. Liverpool appealed for a foul on Ibrahima Konaté, claiming Welbeck had used his hands in the back of the defender, but referee Darren England let the goal stand.

It looked like Brighton were going to go in at the break with the lead — but Liverpool had other ideas. A long ball forward was flicked back towards his own goal by Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, who failed to spot Milos Kerkez lurking behind him. The Hungarian left-back nipped in and produced a beautifully cool lob over Bart Verbruggen to level things at 1–1. An awful individual error from Dunk, and a brilliant, composed finish from Kerkez.

The first half ended 1–1, with both goals coming from sharp moments of opportunism rather than sustained pressure.

Second Half: Welbeck Completes the Job

Brighton came out the stronger side after the break, and Welbeck — already on the scoresheet — made it two. The striker received the ball inside the area and finished calmly with his left foot from close range, sending the ball past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to put Brighton 2–1 up.

Liverpool tried to push for a response, but things got worse when Jeremie Frimpong picked up a yellow card for a foul on Yankuba Minteh — putting him at serious risk of a second booking and forcing Slot to substitute him off, bringing on Rio Ngumoha to protect the right-back’s suspension situation.

Brighton continued to press and nearly added a third. Diego Gómez tried his luck from the edge of the area with a right-footed drive, but Mamardashvili produced another good save to deny him.

Liverpool could not find the equaliser. The final whistle confirmed a 2–1 win for the Seagulls.

Match Stats at a Glance

Liverpool edged possession at 52.3% to Brighton’s 47.7%, but that statistical advantage counted for nothing on the scoreboard. Both sides managed five and four shots on goal respectively, and each picked up three yellow cards across a competitive afternoon in Sussex.

What This Result Means

For Brighton, this is a confidence-boosting win that continues their recent upturn in form. Results had picked up after a difficult January and February — a period that even prompted reports suggesting manager Fabian Hurzeler could be sacked — and the Seagulls will now be pushing to finish in the top half of the table.

For Liverpool, the picture is increasingly grim. Their Premier League title defence has been underwhelming, and the pressure on Arne Slot is growing — noticeable boos rang around Anfield after a 1–1 home draw with Tottenham last weekend, and the club simply cannot afford too many more results like today’s if they are to secure a top-five finish and Champions League football next season.

Player Ratings Highlights

Danny Welbeck (Brighton) — 9/10. The veteran striker was unstoppable today. Two well-taken goals, both showing composure and intelligent movement inside the box. A reminder of just how dangerous he can be on his day.

Milos Kerkez (Liverpool) — 8/10. His goal was the moment of individual brilliance in a tough afternoon for Liverpool. Alert, composed, and technically excellent finish.

Lewis Dunk (Brighton) — 5/10. An otherwise solid defensive display was undone by one costly lapse — the back-pass that gifted Kerkez the equaliser. These things happen, but it shouldn’t at this level.

Giorgi Mamardashvili (Liverpool) — 7/10. Made several important saves to keep Liverpool in the match, but couldn’t keep out either of Welbeck’s finishes. Not much he could do about either goal.

Final Thoughts

This was a thoroughly deserved Brighton win. They were compact, dangerous on the counter, and clinical in front of goal. Liverpool looked short of ideas, particularly after losing Ekitike so early, and their defensive vulnerabilities — which have plagued them all season — were once again exposed at a crucial moment.

With the title race effectively over for Liverpool, the battle for top-five survival is now the story at Anfield. For Brighton, this is the kind of result that shows what they’re capable of when the team is fit and firing.
